Physical accessibility

Both the Wollombi Cultural Centre and behind it the Old Fire Shed Gallery are wheelchair accessible with accessible toilets and an access ramp at the front.

Online accessibility

WVAC is committed to ensuring that this website meets best practice guidelines and at least Priority One requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG). Most pages meet all three Priority levels (also known as AAA) of the WCAG as we believe all users should be able to easily access content on this website.

Disability Discrimination Act

All Australian website owners are obliged by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to ensure that online information and services are accessible by people with disabilities. There is also the requirement to make online resources accessible to those people with technical constraints, such as older browser (and related) technology and slow speed dial-up and mobile internet connections.

2.2 Equal Access is Required by Law

The provision of information and online services through the Worldwide Web is a service covered by the DDA. Equal access for people with a disability in this area is required by the DDA where it can reasonably be provided. This requirement applies to any individual or organisation developing a Worldwide Web page in Australia, or placing or maintaining a Web page on an Australian server. This includes pages developed or maintained for purposes relating to employment; education; provision of services including professional services, banking, insurance or financial services, entertainment or recreation, telecommunications services, public transport services, or government services; sale or rental of real estate; sport; activities of voluntary associations; or administration of Commonwealth laws or programs. All these are areas specifically covered by the DDA.

In addition to these specific areas, provision of any other information or other goods, services or facilities through the Internet is in itself a service, and as such, discrimination in the provision of this service is covered by the DDA. The DDA applies to services whether provided for payment or not.

The accessibility features of this website include:

  • The use of Valid HTML (check it)
  • The use of semantically correct HTML to structure the content for all devices
  • The use of common browser behaviours (underlined links in obvious colours, standard form elements etc.)
  • The use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to separate content from design
  • The use of visible "Skip links" on every page to skip past the navigation information to the main content when using mobile phones or assistive devices such as screen readers
  • Consistant page labelling between navigation links, titles and headings
  • Alternative text for all important visual elements
  • Accessible forms for use by any device
  • No "Self referencing" links (apart from Comment "Permalinks" which are technically in-page anchors anyway)
  • The use of user-friendly and appropriate page addresses
  • We've done away with the ridiculous www. prefix that most sites use, the website (except maybe on an error page) will always force the plain no-www address
