MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL & THANK YOU
The Committee of the Wollombi Valley Arts Council would like to thank all the artists, volunteers, patrons and supporters of the Arts who made 2009 another outstanding year for the WVAC, at the Wollombi Cultural Centre (WCC).
With 120 new financial members, the WVAC was privileged to support 14 extraordinary exhibitions this year, featuring the works of over 80 (mainly local) artists plus our inmate friends.
We all enjoyed the shows by individual artists: Helene Leane, Niall Owens, Ross Fletcher, Julia Francis, Lorna Wall, Mason Williams, Peter Williams, Sue Linton & Shane Lennard, Kaye Lovie & Mary Francis, Penny Walton, Catherine Craig, Juliet Ackery, Michelle Loadsman & Carolyn Peddie (Flora & Fauna) and Fiona Bateman.
PLUS the outstanding contributions from 51 Emerging Artists and 28 Cessnock Correctional Centre inmates.
And, what about those 19 "aproners with attitude" and that fabulous fashion parade of their exquisite stitching!
2010
January Artist in Residence at the WCC.
Garry Jones. Retired Art lecturer and art historian.
Garry was the co-ordinator of the informative and very well attended seminar "Heritage of the Wollombi " in February 2009. The seminar's purpose was "to enhance public appreciation and understanding of the international significance of the many thousands of indigenous art sites along the Wollombi and to explain why they are here and what they represent" Other speakers were John Clegg (archeologist), Gionni di Gravio (archivist), John Fryer (dating & survey) and Wayne Erskine (hydrologist).
If the doors are open, drop into the WCC and discuss with Garry, in a very immediate way, the concepts of an artist's practice, in an open studio situation. He's planning a "showing" on the Saturday of the Australia Day long weekend, with drinks.
With 8 exhibition bookings, already, for 2010, we can look forward to Robert Sing and Peter Williams in March/April, Inside Art opening once again on Easter Friday, Marek Zayler in May, the wonderful Fabric Art Group in June, Janelle McCloy in July, the Emerging Artist Awards in early Oct and Kaye Lovie and Mary Francis re-applying for November.
We all now need the Xmas break to reflect on this great year and to re-energise for a bumper 2010.
