INSIDE ART 2010
Opening 6pm on Easter Friday 2nd April with drinks and nibblies. Come, see and enjoy the variety, originality and beauty of this Art from the Inside (and the Outside) at the Wollombi Cultural Centre (WCC).
The exhibition will feature artworks from St. Helliers Correctional Centre at Muswellbrook and will include, predominantly, a display of indigenous art from inmates and ex inmates.
This annual exhibition, now in its 6th year, provides the inmates with much encouragement.
The art programs within the Correctional Services have created an opportunity to help inmates use their time constructively, to retain or gain their self-esteem, to plan positively for re-entry into society and to reduce re-offending.
Curated by James Whitington, well known indigenous artists Tex Skulthorpe and Les Elvin will help facilitate the exhibition.
Open over the Easter long weekend, and continuing until Sunday 18th April (3 weekends only) from 10am to 4pm.
TRADITIONAL VALLEY ART
An exhibition of aboriginal art by PETER WILLIAMS
Opening at the WCC on Friday 23rd April at 5pm.
This is Peter's 5th exhibition at the WCC and his works should be of great interest to Wollombi Valley residents as his works feature some of the unique engravings and cave art of the Wollombi, using acrilics or charcoal on canvas. Peter, a Ngemba man from the North West (Brewarrina area) of NSW, is usually one of the lead dancers at the Wollombi Corroboree, inaugurated in 1990, as a "thank you" to the Wollombi community for their support of Aboriginal culture.
This exhibition will be open for two weekends, 10am to 4pm, from the 24th April to Sunday 2nd May.
MAREK ZAYLER Painter
Opening on Friday May 7th at 5pm, well known local artist, Julia Francis, will curate this exciting exhibition.
"I have been creatively engaged for the last 25 plus years. Working in charcoal on newsprint then acrylic on paper graduating to canvas, and finally oils about six years ago. It soon became obvious that there were themes emerging. Faces and human body shapes intrigued me. It became apparent that I was painting about restriction. I am in a wheelchair so that made sense and gave me a very particular perspective about life around me."
Exhibition dates May 8th to 23rd
